How Does Snowfall Affect Utility Locating?

Winter is in full throttle and is sure to bring us more heavy snowfall, which means more school closings, traffic delays, and potential tardiness when it comes to your daily routine.

Marking Utilities During Snowfall

When those days come, The Underground Detective will surely receive phone calls from worried clients asking if the snow and ice will delay their utility locating. We tell them that this is a strong possibility because when the snow comes down, spray paint has the chance of running and the paint will not stick to a wet, dirty, icy, or snowy surface. These weather factors could potentially delay the utility markings for days and even weeks in severe winter weather conditions.

Depending on the amount of snowfall, The Underground Detective may have to wait for parking lots and sidewalks to be plowed and treated before any work can be done. If the snow or ice storm is harsh enough (and surely it will be come February), we will have to wait for Old Man Winter to come to a complete halt with his winter storm plans before being able to mark the utilities. We do this for the safety of our customers, technicians, and our equipment. If the job site is located in a grassy or dirt area, the use of marking flags can decrease the delay time when the weather is not cooperating, especially in the snow.
